Mrutyun was born and bred in a village, Aligonda, in the hillcountry of Southern Orissa, one of the States of the Indian Democratic Repbublic. Aligonda Parish has also sent Sukesh and Nilu to be formed as Missionaries of Africa. Sukesh will start his years of pastoral training in Uganda. Nilu has started the study of philosophy. There is a strong Christian presence in that part of the country due to the missionary endeavours of the Spanish CM (Lazarists).

On the day of ordination, a joyful group of musicians and dancers led him from his home, through the village to the crossroad where the Bishop was welcomed. The ceremony was attended by hundreds of Christians from the surroundings villages, seated under colourful drapes that protected them against the sun. The Society was represented by two confreres, Piet Kramer and Martin Grenier, and aspirants / candidates on their way to holidays. Fifteen diocesan priests also attended, almost all young men! After the ceremony the family welcomed many guests around huge simmering pots and pans and a mountain of rice.
