A tous les confrères qui ont participé au FSM à Nairobi

Bien des salutations de Rome ! Depuis plusieurs jours, vous participez au Forum Social Mondial à Nairobi. J'espère que ce moment très spécial a été l'occasion de rencontrer des gens différents, une période pour apprendre et pour découvrir, et un moment pour vivre bien des surprises. Sans doute aussi, cela a été pour vous un temps de fatigue, d'attente et de recherche de moyens et de chemins, un temps de frustrations. Toutefois, vous y êtes parvenus. Félicitations !

Maintenant vous allez vivre quelques jours de tranquillité et de réflexion. Ce sera l'occasion de passer en revue et d'assimiler les événements les plus importants de ce Forum Social Mondial. Je crois que cela représente également un moment de choix. En lisant les différents rapports et les 'blogs' - grand merci à Sean, Yago, Jacek et Wilbert - concernant ce qui s'est passé à Nairobi, je songeais à ces paroles de Paul dans sa lettre aux Romains : " En effet, la création aspire de toutes ses forces à voir cette révélation des fils de Dieu. Car la création a été livrée au pouvoir du néant, non parce qu'elle l'a voulu, mais à cause de celui qui l'a livrée à ce pouvoir. Pourtant elle a gardé l'espérance d'être, elle aussi, libérée de l'esclavage, de la dégradation inévitable, pour connaître la liberté, la gloire des enfants de Dieu. Nous le savons bien, la création tout entière crie sa souffrance, elle passe par les douleurs d'un enfantement qui dure encore. " Ro 8, 19-22

Il y a beaucoup de gémissements qui montent des bidonvilles de Kibera, Mukuru, Mathare ou bien d'autres endroits où vous travaillez. Nous ne pouvons pas nous habituer aux souffrances. Dieu merci. Un sentiment de souffrance et une réaction de colère face à l'injustice sont souvent le premier pas d'un engagement pour la justice, la paix et la réconciliation. Néanmoins, il y a plusieurs autres étapes à apprendre et à entreprendre si nous voulons exercer une action à long terme.

Lorsque nous avions discuté au Conseil Général de notre présence au FSM, il était devenu clair que d'être engagés dans un tel événement était très important. Mais nous avons pensé aussi que ces jours de réflexion pourraient être un soutien pour vous, pour nous et pour toute la Société afin d' approfondir notre compréhension et notre vision concernant notre engagement pour la justice et la paix. Un travail personnel de votre part est requis. Il se peut que vous ayez ramassé des brochures, des livres, des CD et des DVD et rempli vos carnets d'adresses. Tant mieux. Quand même, il ne serait pas bien de quitter Nairobi sans mettre par écrit pour vous et pour vos Provinciaux un certain nombre de points devenus des convictions intimes.

Encore merci à vous, pour avoir pris le temps de vivre cette expérience. Merci à vos confrères restés au poste, ce qui vous a permis de vous absenter. Merci à tous ceux qui ont organisé la rencontre. Au nom du Conseil Général je vous souhaite une réunion ouverte, sérieuse et fructueuse.

To all the confreres participating at the WSF in Nairobi

Dear Confreres,

Many greetings from Rome. Since several days, you have been in Nairobi, attending the World Social Forum. I hope that this very special time, has been a time for meeting different people, a time of learning and discovering, a time of many surprises. No doubt it must have been also a time of tiredness, waiting, looking for means and ways; a time of frustration. But you've made it. Congratulations.

Now you will have few days of quietness and reflection. A time to chew and digest the most important events of this World Social Forum. I believe that this is also a very important moment. Reading different reports and blogs - many thanks to Sean, Yago, Jacek and Wilbert - about what was happening in Nairobi, I thought of this word of Paul in the Epistle to the Romans: " For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that creation is groaning in labour pains even until now." Ro 8: 19-22

A lot of groaning sounds are coming up from the slums of Kibera, Mukuru, Mathare or from many other places where you are working. We cannot get used to sufferings. Thanks be to God. Hurt feelings and anger are often the first steps towards a real commitment to Justice, Peace and Reconciliation. But there are many other steps to be learnt and taken if we want to have a long term action.

When we discussed in the General Council, our presence at the WSF, it became clear that exposure to such event was very important. But we thought also that these days of reflection could help you, could help us and the whole Society to deepen her understanding and vision of our commitment to Justice and Peace. Some personal work from your part is needed. You might have collected leaflets, books, CDs, DVDs and filled your address-book. Fine. Still it would not be right to leave Nairobi without having put down for yourselves and for your provincials a certain number of points which have become your convictions.

Many thanks to all of you, for having taken this time. Thank you to your brothers who stayed at home and made it possible for you. Thank you to those who organised it. In the name of the General Council, I would like to wish you a frank, serious and fruitful meeting.
